Humble Beginnings

Listlessness filled the air of Ngaliema Hospital’s waiting room. Two young nuns had their veiled heads lowered in prayer while their fellow sister was quarantined in a room for the protection of others. They were part of a sisterhood of Flemish nuns that had been sent here on missionary work and to simultaneously run a hospital, The Yambuku Mission hospital. It was a simple clinic made up of several small buildings of whitewashed walls and tin roofs. These buildings were delicately scattered beside a remote church in upcountry Zaire, where people could go for injections of quinine and minimal medical care.
